Alpha lipoic acid is an organic compound with powerful antioxidant properties. It works within the mitochondria and with the body’s natural anti-oxidant defenses to fight against free radicals.
Free radicals, are generated when the body metabolizes food into energy, are harmful chemicals that disrupt cells and harm tissues and organs. Alpha-lipoic acid, blocks the formation of free radicals and protects cells from damage. The body uses up antioxidants as they fight free radicals, but alpha-lipoic acid may help maintain and revitalize antioxidants, providing protection against disease.
Due to Alpha lipoic acid being both water and fat soluble, it’s easily absorbed and transported across cell membranes; thus, free radical protection occurs both inside and outside of cells.
It acts as a neuroprotective agent in various pathogenic pathways. It increases acetylcholine production, inhibits hydroxyl radical production, and increases the process of getting rid of reactive oxygen species (free radicals).
